My May Goals

Hey guys! I can’t believe May is here! Can you? I’m so glad it’s starting to warm up outside. The last patch of snow in our yard has finally melted! That means spring is here! With these temperatures warming up, I feel compelled to do more work in the yard. This is our first spring in this house so I’m excited to plant a few new things and move others around. I planted tulip bulbs in the fall and they have started to bloom, which makes me very happy. I must say they make the house look pretty cute! Last summer, that spot was a weed field. It was horrendous! These were the kind that grow high with prickly thorns. It was a nightmare pulling those suckers up! Now I’ve started to notice them again but I have high hopes of keeping them under control this time. I purchased a weed blocker fabric and I’m gonna cover it with mulch. That should kill them off, right? I also purchased a dormant hydrangea and plan to put it in the corner of the house. I love hydgrangea’s!

We also purchased a few boards to boarder off the front garden along the house. They’re not like a board you’d find for a vegetable garden, it reminds me of a beam, so it’ll look more rustic. We already purchased them so we have to create a trench first. We are going to stack it two high and drive a stake through to keep them in place. This was all Sam’s idea and I give him all the credit. Next we’ll lay down more soil and cover it with the weed fabric and finish it with mulch so it looks nice. The only problem I foresee is I already have tulips established and blooming. The fear I have is that if we uproot them then they will die, and I don’t want that to happen. I’ll be doing my research and I’ll keep you updated. The plan is to have that all done by the end of this upcoming weekend.

As the weather has been warming up, Sam and I have been spending more days outside. We’ve been making more of an effort to get out of the house to enjoy the sun. I woke up one morning to the sound of Sam walking toward the bed. I looked up to his beaming face (I could tell he had just woken up too) and he said “I wanna go for a bike ride” I grumbled and moaned and thought “Just 5 more minutes” He hopped into the bed and whispered “I wanna take the fat tire bikes!” Can you just hear the little boy inside him? I’m still waking up and thinking “ok just count to 10 and move. Ready?” Haha! This is our marriage! We had a lot of fun that morning. We were out on the trails for about three hours. One thing I wanted to say about the fat tire bikes, I never would have gotten on one if it wasn’t for Sam encouraging me and I certainly wouldn’t have taken it on a rugged trail, but I’m glad he pushed me.

A fountain we came across on our hike. I had no idea this was here!

Aside from taking our fat tire bikes on the trail, we’ve been hiking quite a bit lately. Riding a bike down a trail is a lot of fun and we got to see so much of the city in a different way but there’s just something about taking a hike. I love hiking because it’s good for my mental health. Raise your hand if you need a mental health day! Recently, we hiked over 6 miles and I had every intention of getting things done around the house and the yard, but once we got home I was so wiped out. It literally took all my energy for the rest of the day. I even took an hour long nap, it felt great. It was then that I realized that I must have needed it and gave myself a little grace.

One good thing I noticed about being in quarantine, since everything is closed, ain’t got nothin’ better to do than work on my house. Same? Also, since all the crafty stores have been closed too, I’m starting to think creatively about home décor. I’m considering doing some woodwork to create more art around my house. I’m just gonna do things trial and error and see where it goes. I do know I’ve got an idea to build a bench for my porch. I’m thinking farmhouse style. I have looked at similar styles and they are expensive! I figure the cost of the lumber would be cheaper. But I can’t get too far ahead of myself, there’s still some things I need to complete first, like finishing the touch up from our recent project.

Pretty much immediately after I finished the trim touch up in the kitchen, Sam was ready to get started on the living room and hallway. Once we finished the hallway, he had an idea to paint the hardwood floors. What would your reaction be if your husband proposed that idea? At first I was a little skeptical but as I thought more about it and looked at a few photos, I thought, why not? I want this house to feel like ours. Just like that, our simple painting project turned into a much bigger project. I won’t get too much into how this went since that will be reserved for another blog post, but what I will say is that it looks way better! To be honest, I was blown away by how great it turned out and the space is so much brighter. The walls were a yellowish-brown and I was not a fan, it was time for a change. It’s fun to make this house my own and see it transform into my home. So before the end of May, which by the way, we’re going on vacation then, I need to complete all the touch up.

Since our vacation is now nearing closer and closer, my main goal is to finish the projects and super clean the house. I hate coming home from a trip to find that my house is a mess. I don’t want to come home relaxed and instantly feel stressed. So I’m gonna keep working hard and push myself because our vacation is coming sooner than we think and I’ve got a lot to do before then. What are your goals for May?
